A New Town
Behind the old walls,
Behind the gates old
And behind the golden past
About which they told,
The great and big houses were being made.
And to the visitors,
They sold and resold,
The pictures of a new town
On the backdrop of the old.
New promises were made,
Old promises were kept.
Behind the security of these promises,
The old town slept,
Peacefully, even in the coldest of nights.
They showed to the visitors
The picture of a peaceful population,
Which sleeps the deepest,
Even in a revolt that shakes the nation.
New crimes were committed,
Old crimes were omitted,
And thus the legacy
Was inherited,
From time to time.
They showed to the visitors,
And so the visitors saw,
The picture of a lawless town,
Under the vigilance of the law.
New roads were made,
Where the old roads lay,
And to the travellers
They showed the same way
To the same destinations.
But those same roads,
To the visitors they told,
The stories of a new town
On the backdrop of the old.
